A philosopher’s layout

QWERTY was a clever answer to a dead machine: it scattered the alphabet so that type-bars would not clash. We have kept the scatter and lost the machine. Other layouts put common letters under strong fingers, but then split the vowels across both hands, as if language syllables were inventories to be tallied.

HackHaste does the thing so obvious that it looks like a joke. Syllables are consonantal gestures containing the breaths of the vowels. Anyone who has heard a child say ma or no or the already possesses the science.

ETAOINSHR all live at home, on the correct sides. Close to three quarters of letters are struck without leaving home. Physical Caps is Control (Command on Apple and NeXT). Shortcuts follow the letter. AltGr follows the letter.

Each new finger learned arrives with a new phrase. Say them aloud once, looking. Repeat, not looking. Phrases are cities, sentences nations, paragraphs whole worlds. The syllables constructed are the people and families.
